Time to go ! Roberto Di Matteo steps down as Schalke boss after just 7 months in charge

Roberto Di Matteo has stepped down  after just 7 months in charge of  Schalke . The former Chelsea boss took the job in October with the team sitting in 11th place in the table but ended the season at 6th place , failing to qualify for the Champions League but just the Europa League.

IBB expresses deep concern over the current state of the nation

Former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida has expressed deep concern over various problems the country is having -fuel scarcity and power failure .

The ex-general addressed these issues when he visited incumbent Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu at his home in Minna yesterday May 25th with former military Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar .

PDP appoints new BoT Chairman , Haliru Mohammed

Former acting national Chairman of the party, and ex-defence minister Haliru Mohammed, has been appointed acting Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP . His endorsement as chairman  by the PDP’s BoT came on Monday night at a meeting at the Aso Rock presidential villa, Abuja.

 Mr. Mohammed emerged against rumors that President Jonathan would be assuming the position as he leaves office Friday. This was because , while resigning last week, former Chairman of the BOT, Tony Anenih,  had said he was vacating the office to allow Mr. Jonathan to assume the post.

Mr. Mohammed , who was a  former Customs officer,  served as a Commissioner, Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission in 1999, and later as Minister of Communication in 2001 under the Olusegun Obasanjo government.

Soldiers take over capital oil, load drums with fuel

According to Punch , officials of the Nigerian Army on Monday took over the Ojodu Berger outlet of Capital Oil, buying petroleum products in drums, after scaring away thousands of consumers.

The armed personnel came in the guise of maintaining peace and order, but they soon abandoned their primary responsibility for fuel racket. They shoved, maltreated and sent away those who were on queue to be attended to, thereby gaining access to have their drums loaded with fuel.

Manchester City players arrive Toronto for their post-season tour of North America

Manchester City players  have arrived in Canada for their end-of-season, just a day after ending their Premier League campaign by beating Southampton at the Etihad Stadium.The team travelled to take part in a friendly against Toronto FC at BMO Field on May 27, before facing Houston Dynamo 24 hours later.

The team will then travel  to New York to attend their sister club New York City FC's game against Dynamo in MLS for the final leg . Those players look tired and need some rest! See more players below

President Goodluck Jonathan signs two bills into law few days to handover

This was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati .The two bills include the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 and the Immigration Act 2015.It would be recalled that the Senate on May 4 passed the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 into law.

Among other things, the Act prohibits female circumcision or genital mutilation, forceful ejection from home and harmful widowhood practices.

Sergio Aguero scoops Premier League Golden Boot award 2015

 Manchester City's Sergio Aguero was awarded with the golden boot  on Sunday after a season which saw him score an impressive 26 league goals. He beat Tottenham's Kane and Chelsea's Diego Costa - who scored 21 and 20 goals respectively in the Premier League this season.

Unfortunately ,his goals were not enough to help Man City maintain the Premier League title as they finished 8 points behind champions Chelsea.

End of Fuel Scarcity : Ifeanyi Ubah releases 13million litres of fuel

Ifeanyi Ubah, a staunch supporter President Goodluck Jonathan and Director of Capital Oil and Gas has offered to supply 13 million litres of fuel to depots around the country to ease the fuel scarcity problem in  Nigeria  .His company made this known in a press statement issued few hours ago.

''On Saturday 16th May 2015, we received an SMS ordering the suspension of loading activities in all depots from Monday 18th May 2015. We later realized that this directive was as a result of unpaid funds owed to transporters by oil marketers who in turn are owed by the Federal Government.”

Senate Presidency: Senator Akume disagrees with Tinubu, Akande

Major contender in the race for the Senate Presidency, Senator George Akume has disagreed with the Pioneer Chairman of the APC,  Chief Bisi Akande and a party leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, over their declaration that zoning arrangement won’t be used to determine the next Senate President.

Akande and Tinubu are on the same view that  the party would not employ the use of zoning to determine the next senate president and that  anybody was free to fight for the position but Akume  who spoke with journalists in his Abuja residence on Friday evening,  has a different opinion.

Michael Schumacher is now 'making progress' in bid to recover from injuries he got from horror ski accident

German Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher  who suffered severe brain injuries in December 2013 when he hit a rock while skiing in the French Alps is now  'making progress' , his manager, Sebine Kehm has revealed . Kehm insisted that the Formula 1 legend is showing signs of improvement despite the severity of his condition. He told German newspaper BILD :
"We are pleased to continue to say that he is making progress, and I say that always, given the severity of his head injuries."
Schumacher's wife ,Corinna Schumacher ,  earlier this month sold her husband's £25m jet and holiday home after accepting the fact that he is unlikely to ever fully recover.

Jose Mourinho named Barclays Manager of the season as Chelsea star Eden Hazard receives best player award

 Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been named Barclays Premier League manager of the season for the third time. The 'Special One' guided Chelsea to their first Premier League title in five years and a League Cup success in the second season of his second spell at the club.

Blues  midfielder Eden Hazard, who scored 20 goals for the champions, was named player of the season. This adds to his Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers' Association awards.

The 275 persons were evacuated from the camp to enable them undergo a psycho social rehabilitation programme arranged by the office of the National Security Adviser. They are presently in a safe location considered more conducive for them to undergo the next phase of the programme. They are expected to be better prepared to join their communities at the end the programme.

Luis Figo withdraws from FIFA presidential election race , labels Sepp Blatter a dictator

Former Portuguese and Real Madrid Legend Luis Figo has withdrawn from the election for president of FIFA . The retired 42-year-old footballer released a lengthy statement criticizing the process and said FIFA was 'living under a dictatorship' with Sepp Blatter.

Boko Haram: Borno state government pleads for help as IDPs deliver 132 babies daily in camps

Speaking to newsmen on Thursday in Maiduguri, , May 21st , the executive chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency Alhaji Grema Terab,  has  called out for local and international support as each of the 21 IDP camps record about six child births daily. The IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) are largely those displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency.

Terab noted that the birth rate in the camps was high, and most times they record a large number of twins.According to him , to reduce the hardship faced by women during childbirth, the state government is planning to set up a medically equipped labour room in each of the camps .

Federal Government begins privatization of Nigerian Railways

The Federal Government has nowcommenced the privatization of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

This Day reports that the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) has already asked the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and the Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (NIAF), to commence the privatization of NRC and other railway facilities across Nigeria.

According to Director-General of the BPE, Benjamin Dikki, the decision to reform the railways was borne out of the government’s desire to avoid the collapse and eventual shut down of the railways, generally regarded as a loss making but socially and economically imperative to the nation..

18 states in Nigeria are about to embark on an indefinite strike following their unpaid salary arrears and pensions , Punch reports. The General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, confirmed that the congress had sent its task force team to various geo-political zones of the country and directed those who were being owed to begin strike.
"The various Task Forces are working. Plateau is on strike, Cross Rivers is going on Monday; the various task forces are working .A team is leaving for Benue to commence action; they are now free to commence action and we are supporting them ," he said.
These 18 states who are already on/ about to embark on an a strike action over unpaid salaries include:

According to reports in Spain  ,Paul Pogba has moved a step closer to landing his dream move to Barcelona .  Once FIFA lifts their transfer embargo , the French star  could fight for a move to the Catalan club.Spanish daily Sport have indicated that the 22-year-old  was described as only wanting to play at the Nou Camp.

The outgoing Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria,in an interview with select media houses in Lagos today , said President Jonathan's decision to concede defeat after the March 28 presidential election helped to avert evil in Nigeria. According to him , President Jonathan's action to concede was courageous.

Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido has threatened to retaliate APC's sabotage of  PDP . The governor who made the disclosure while commissioning the new State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC) office in Dutse, the state capital , promised to repay the All Progressives Congress,APC back in its own coin.

National Assembly Leadership: We won’t sacrifice quality for zoning – Asiwaju Tinubu

Speaking with journalists at the Defence House, Abuja,  on Thursday APC's National Leader, Asiwaju  Tinubu, said that the party will not use the principle of zoning to compromise the quality of leadership for the National Assembly.

Tinbu who dismissed rumours of  his interest in who leads the legislature said that he has decided to allow all those interested in the leadership of the National Assembly to contest.
"You have heard from the party, you have heard from leadership. I’m a disciplined party man and we will look at it critically.However the nation is expecting us to take a decisive leadership decision and make one meritoriously. Merit will not be compromised. You have to be competent, you have to posses the kind of character required from leaders. You have to be a pan Nigerian and possess a very solid character to lead the National Assembly. That is what we are talking about. It’s not zoning to compromise quality of leadership and competency of an individual.
